London-based visual-artist Lucy Feng predominantly uses a camera to create dark, fantastical images that explore ideas of psychology, spirituality, human nature and the dark side of desire. Her subjects become characters inhabiting strange, ethereal worlds. Most of Lucy’s projects are born in a rather eclectic sketchbook where she plays freely with concepts through drawing, painting and collage before the more controlled process of carefully constructing each shot. Lucy has no formal education in photography and instead attributes her sheltered, solitary childhood in Herefordshire to her creative development – during which she’d act as makeup artist, stylist, set-builder, model and photographer for her shoots. These early self-portraits also led to five years of professional modelling. Working in front of the camera helped Lucy to empathise with the models in her own shoots and to understand the importance of creating a safe space where they can be expressive.
